Lunenburg to the Gulf of Maine — Into the Open Water
We’ll depart Lunenburg on August 8th after clearing customs and reviewing safety procedures. Once underway, we’ll cross the U.S.–Canada border by sea and head into the Gulf of Maine, a complex stretch of ocean known for its changing conditions, cooler air, and abundant marine life.
During this offshore portion, you’ll rotate through Libra’s 3 hours on, 6 hours off watch schedule and gain valuable hands-on experience in:
- Offshore navigation and course plotting
- Night sailing with radar, AIS, and GPS
- Helm work and sail trim in mixed sea states
- Fog procedures and lookout strategy
- Entering U.S. waters by sea
- Approaching Maine — Tides, Currents, and Hidden Harbors
As we near the coast of Maine, we’ll adjust course based on conditions and explore possible anchorages or layovers along the Bold Coast, such as Cutler, Roque Island, or Mount Desert Island.
This coastal portion will include:
-
- Tidal planning through narrow channels and straits
- Close-quarters navigation in fog and near rockbound shores
- Anchoring and mooring technique in remote harbors
- Route flexibility based on local weather and swell
- Final Sail to Portland
Our final approach takes us down the coast past Penobscot Bay and into Portland, Maine, where we’ll tie up and clear U.S. customs. Expect busy harbor traffic and rapidly shifting coastal wind patterns, perfect for testing your helm and trim skills one last time before docking.
