The Silver Current Voyage

The Offshore Passage: Newport to Bermuda

Sail straight into the heart of the North Atlantic on this classic offshore passage from Newport to Bermuda a 650 to 700-nautical-mile bluewater journey that includes 5 to 6 days at sea, a Gulf Stream crossing, and real-world offshore experience. This is a rite of passage for any sailor looking to test their skills and gain confidence in true ocean sailing.

You’ll become a full member of the crew as we ride the fall trade wind pattern south toward the coral-fringed shores of Bermuda. This trip is all about the rhythm of life at sea, with nonstop sailing, watch rotations, and immersive seamanship from weighing anchor in Newport to setting it in Bermuda.

We’ll be sailing a route made famous by the Newport to Bermuda Race, one of the most storied offshore races in the world. Though we’re not racing, we’ll be following in the wake of these ocean athletes — navigating the same weather systems, currents, and strategic decisions they face during the biennial event. It’s an incredible opportunity to sail a legendary course and experience its challenges firsthand.

Departing Newport — Into the North Atlantic

We’ll depart Newport, Rhode Island on October 25th, heading offshore shortly after clearing the coastal traffic lanes. You’ll settle into Libra’s 3 hours on, 6 hours off watch system and begin the transition from land to sea life. As we leave sight of land, you'll be focused on:

  • Helm time and steering in long-period swells
  • Night sailing under stars using radar, AIS, and GPS
  • Weather tracking and sail plan management
  • Crew coordination and energy management
  • Crossing the Gulf Stream — Nature’s Fast Lane

Roughly halfway into the passage, we’ll enter and cross the Gulf Stream, a powerful ocean current flowing from the Gulf of Mexico toward the North Atlantic. This is a critical section of the trip — known for sudden weather shifts, dynamic sea states, and a vital learning opportunity.

  • During the crossing, we’ll focus on:
  • Timing and routing through the stream using GRIB files and current charts
  • Reading sea state and adjusting sail plans in active waters
  • Watch coordination and safe helm transitions
  • Interpreting satellite and onboard weather tools

Crossing the Stream safely and confidently is a milestone for any offshore sailor — and one you’ll take with you into future passages.

The Final Push to Bermuda — Trade Wind Sailing

After the Gulf Stream, conditions begin to stabilize. The seas ease and the breeze becomes more consistent, often allowing for broad-reaching toward Bermuda in warm, blue water. As we approach landfall, you’ll help manage the approach, navigation lights, and offshore-to-inshore transition as we close in on St. George’s Harbour.

Why This Passage is Special

  • A True Bluewater Challenge – Five to six days nonstop offshore, with open-ocean conditions and hands-on learning
