The Full Story of Sail Libra
Libra was born in Germany in 1969. She was built as a pedigree of her time, designed by Bill Tripp Jr. She was originally built by the Holden family of New England, the history is a bit foggy for a while, where she ended up in Alabama across from the dock where Captain Ryan ran his Day Sail business running tourists around on sunset cruises and dolphin tours.
In 2013 Captain Ryan was able to purchase Libra and undertake a 2 year refit, with other items like the hardtop and solid railing added at later times. Libra was built for speed and endurance, Captain Ryan brought all of that back to her during that time.
In 2015 Libra ran her first official training passage on a race from Pensacola, FL to Havana Cuba. Libra departed that day from the race course like a bunch of green horn sailors, with a newly refitted boat that hadn't sailed for decades, in the first legal race to Cuba in over 50 years! We started slow but ended up winning our class on that race.
Captain Ryan works hard to ensure that every guest crew member has the opportunity to advance at whatever pace they need, guiding them along the way the vessel should be operated in whatever conditions made be over the horizon.
